OVERVIEW OF NYFW SS17

It is that time of the year again where all the fashionistas of the world join one another to celebrate what is the greatest day for individuals who appreciate the creativity and inspiration of fashion. My favourite time of the year is back and once again I will be sharing with you my favourite collections of Fashion week and the trends I have spotted on the catwalk.

Let's talk trends and what I have repeatedly seen on the catwalk that is soon to be a thing for SS17:

Asymmetric cuts
NYFW took on a very relaxed and cool atmosphere for SS17 due to the asymmetric cut that the majority of collections displayed. Presented were asymmetric skirts and dresses such as Proenza Schouler and Prabal Gurung, cut out shoulders and sleeves such as Jill Stuart and even the tiniest of asymmetric details on garments. I particularly liked how Diane Von Furstenberg also created a clashing combination of asymmetry by mixing prints all into one garment. When it comes to material I think that silk in particularly creates a beautiful silhouette as it allows the garment to move more freely like Prabal Gurung's incredible grape coloured asymmetric dress. I am loving this trend because I think it is very flattering for the body as it can elongate legs which is always a plus and it can exaggerate shoulders ... not forgetting that it can subtly show off a little bit of flesh in a classy way.

Neon
The main colour palettes for SS17 can be hard to spot during fashion week because so many designers express their collection through different colours and prints that it starts to become overwhelming. However, there were a lot of skin coloured/earthy tones which appeared over and over ... I mean do I have to mention Yeezy which is known for these colour hues. But look as far as Dennis Basso, Nicholas K, Ryan Roche and Dion Lee as just a few collections which incorporated these lighter tones within their collection, also keep an eye out for those extra bright yellow and orange tones which made a statement on the catwalk. But other than these lighter tones there was a colour trend on the opposite side of the spectrum which stood out in particularly throughout NYFW and that was NEON. The first thing that may come into mind is Alexander Wang's cali-surfer/punk collection which was a little less subtle featuring everything from neon accessories to visible neon stitching. I have to admit I am not the biggest fan of neon and it has been executed very badly on the high street giving it a bad reputation. However, Alexander Wang's collaboration with Adidas has made it a little more acceptable to start incorporating neon into our wardrobes, as well as designers such as Nicole Miller, Sies Marjan and Jason Wu who have all added a touch of neon into their collections whether it be a full head-to-toe look or those minor details.

The one shoulder
Now we all know that the 'off-the-shoulder' look has taken this Spring/Summer by storm, therefore I think we were all anticipating to see whether it was a trend for SS17 so that we could keep them hidden in our wardrobes and dust them off for next year. However, before I tell you the new trend in town ... many designers still bared the shoulders so I wouldn't get rid of your off-the-shoulder tops just yet. But for SS17 there is a new spin on showing some shoulder, as I have already mentioned asymmetric is very much in therefore I'm afraid only one shoulder will be getting a tan (but you could always alternate, so it isn't completely hopeless). As I've already expressed my love for baring my shoulders, I am going to be all over this. I particularly liked how Monse incorporated this into their collection by deconstructing the shirt and throwing it off the one shoulder, a very relaxed and effortless look which everybody can do with an oversized white shirt. For more inspiration browse Tome, J Crew and Self Portrait's collections.

Bras/Tiny Bralets
Dare to bare all in SS17? We have all heard the phrase 'less is more' and for SS17 that is literal. It seems there has been a shortage of material within the fashion industry because the 'bralet' has got even smaller, to the point where we have models in bras strutting down the runway (I best start buying some fancy bras). Now if you have a small chest and washboard abs you are going to look uh-mazing, look no further than Altuzarra's fun and flirtatious ruffled bra tops, paired with python prints to create print clashing perfection. Now lets come back down to reality, who is lucky enough to have that body type? Not me that's for sure, but don't worry we can still join in with the trend. Phelan styled their eyelet bra top over a crisp white shirt to create a more modern look. Or if you want a smart look, Victoria Beckham paired her velvet bra top with matching trousers and a blazer.

Ruffles and Fringing
Ruffles aren't over yet, as we swiftly move into Autumn/Winter the high street have already stocked their shelves with all kinds of ruffles shirts, trousers and exaggerated sleeves. But it seems that this trend isn't over yet as there were many ruffles taking over NYFW, but even bigger, if that's possible? Make a bold statement with oversized ruffles covering your shoulders like Beaufille or opt for ruffles on the bottom half like Rachel Comey. Or if in doubt just go the full way and wear a dress head-to-toe ruffle dress like ZAC Zac Posen. Now although ruffles stole the limelight, fringing did make an appearance from many of the collections. DKNY took fringing to the next level displaying a hooded boiler suit with fringing stitched to the chest and left to hang, dragging on the floor. However, I particularly liked Sally LaPointe's embroidered skirts with a touch of fringing down the one side and the hemline.

A few other details I spotted were the slip on mules with a pointed toe, many of them were designer with more exposure to the top of the foot to create the illusion of longer legs (Zara currently do some great dupes of these, you will find a link to them on my 'Date Night' post).
Floral was another thing that was very in during NYFW, but this season they seemed more delicate, not as flamboyant. Look at the likes of Coach and Tadashi Shoji who created a subtle effect by printing them onto sheer material.

My favourite collection:
There were particular things that I liked from different collections. I loved the use of crushed velvet in Victoria Beckham's collection, the cut out squared fur jumper by J Mendel, the luxe and minimalism from Hellessy, the print clashing perfection by Altuzarra. But I think overall my favourite collection had to be Adam Lippes. I loved everything about this collection, particularly the blue and black striped knitted dress with the badass blue ankle boots. It is such a fun collection with the contrast of different colours and prints and there are so many textures to the garments. There are statement pieces, but also minimalist items creating a collection that can be worn on a daily basis. Also, I NEED those floral print boots and the feathered coat. Bravo Adam Lippes an amazing collection.

Thank you for reading, I would love to know what collection was your favourite from NYFW? Next up ... London Fashion Week.
