NEVER JUDGE A BOOK BY ITS COVER

Remember the days of when you were a young, naive child, trying to rebel in every possible way you could from your parents by choosing the most outrageous outfit you could find in your wardrobe because you were either 1) trying to pull a stunt and embarrass your parents, 2) embracing your independence and being a sass queen or 3) completely unaware of the outside world around you and simply just wanted to be superwomen for the day (at the end of the day you were a child right?).

I will always remember popping out for the day with my mum and adults starting small talk with me by commenting on what I was wearing "Wow, aren't your flashing trainers cool ...", "Aww I love your floral headband". It would be a compliment every time because lets face it no adult is going to offend a young child on their outfit choice (ok, maybe the less maternal ones), so why does everything change when you turn into an adult yourself?

Nowadays if you wore flashing trainers you would be committing social suicide, meaning a sarcy comment heading your way from a hormonal teen or a subtle poke and waving finger from an eldery to their other half. I've always been a firm believer of being able to wear what you want and that nobody should ever be able to take that away from you.

One thing I've never understood in this life and will continue to be utterly bewildered by is why people are so concerned with what others are wearing. Is it on your body? Is it effecting your life? No. So why can something so innocent result in the ugly truth of bullying purely because of the clothes on someone's back?.

So many people express themselves through their clothing, it can bring individuality, confidence and can even tell a story. It's an art form, creativity, yet the majority of people wouldn't look at a flamboyant outfit the same way that they would look at a vibrant painting and that is something I will never get my head around. I'm so over hearing 'she's got no style' or 'is that what they call stylish?', it's just an unfair comment because what is style? Style cannot be defined as one thing, every individual possesses their own style. We don't have to understand every expression of 'style' and that's ok, but let's not beat somebody down because of our own confusion.

We should be celebrating people expressing themselves, particularly women as we have come so far in order to wear what we want to. So the next time you are about to judge somebody's outfit take a moment and ask yourself why???
